This is the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens birth. Actually the official day already past – it was February 7th. Why am I thinking about him one might ask? Last night I came across a quote of his in a book I am reading of Philip Guston. The book is Night Studio, A Memoir of Philip Guston, by his daughter Musa Meyer. It is a compelling read. A haunting read.
Back to Dickens... I got to thinking about how a day in the studio could start and end with a few of his book titles: Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities and Bleak House. We have all had those days but hopefully they will be rare.
…Whoever is devoted to an art must be content
to deliver himself wholly up to it and find his recompense in it.
-Charles Dickens
Guston had this quote hanging in his studio.
