WINTER

It is finally snowing here!  Winter in action will change the landscape in magical ways.  Six inches are expected.  I can't wait to go out and take pictures of our first storm of this season.

ARCHIVES

FRIDAY
watercolor

Now Interior Design Studios has featured my paintings in their stunning showrooms.  Last week, while I was in the middle of doing taxes, they called looking for more abstract works.  I checked the archives and sent them eight images.  And they wanted all of them.  What a sweet February treat!  Luckily I had frames and matboard on hand and was able to frame them all.  Tomorrow the work gets delivered.  And I will get back to finishing the taxes.

DICKENS' WORLD

This is the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens birth. Actually the official day already past – it was February 7th. Why am I thinking about him one might ask? Last night I came across a quote of his in a book I am reading of Philip Guston. The book is Night Studio, A Memoir of Philip Guston, by his daughter Musa Meyer. It is a compelling read. A haunting read.

Back to Dickens... I got to thinking about how a day in the studio could start and end with a few of his book titles: Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities and Bleak House. We have all had those days but hopefully they will be rare.

…Whoever is devoted to an art must be content
to deliver himself wholly up to it and find his recompense in it.
                                                                -Charles Dickens

Guston had this quote hanging in his studio.

FOUND OBJECTS

Happy Valentine's Day

I found these objects on different walks.  The angel was found this past Sunday on the side of the road after leaving Audubon's Habitat.  And the heart shaped stone was found on the beach in Provincetown in May of 2005.  They come together to wish you all a day filled with love and magic.

BLACK & WHITE

This is part of a series of work I did last summer that just got photographed this weekend.  Since I did them they have been rolled up and stashed away.  But it was time to unroll them.  For me looking at work months later is like opening up a fabulously wrapped present.  There are always surprises  to be found.
This one is acrylic, gesso and graphite on paper measuring about 36 by 42 inches.  I will be posting the rest in the next few days.

SHEAR DANCE

I will be writing an article shortly on my scissor paintings, so I took my large shears to the studio yesterday.  I did several sketches and photographs for potential material.  Reviewing the images on the computer last night this photo made an impression.  The image would be correctly viewed in a portrait layout as the scissor is actually hanging by a thumbtack on the wall.  But in this landscape layout I like the sense of dance this tool conveys.
